Encryption and Removable / Fixed Disk Indentification

When a user inserts a form of storage device into a workstation installed with DESlock+, the storage identifies itself in two ways.

Removable

  • The disk has indentified that it is removable i.e. it is connected via USB port (Universal Serial Bus). As such it will be subject to the next stage to be governed by the Removable Media Encryption (RME) filter driver.
  • The user will then have the option to choose either File or FDE encryption modes.

Fixed

  • The disk has identified that it is not removable and is fixed. This would usually be attached to the motherboard (i.e. HDD, SSD) As the disk is Fixed, there is no option offered for removable encryption modes.

Supported Connection Types

Encryption Mode Disk Connection Type
SATA eSATA USB SD
RME
Removable Fixed Removable Fixed Removable Fixed Removable Fixed
FDE
File
FDE
FDE (only)

For data safety, external SATA and eSATA disks that identify as removable are not supported for FDE.
