How does a user check if their client software was obtained from an ESET Endpoint Encryption Server?

Right-click the ESET Endpoint Encryption (EEE) Icon in the Notification Area (also known as the System Tray).
If the entry Proxy Sync menu item is present you are an EEE Server managed user.
Alternatively if you select the About ESET Endpoint Encryption menu item, the type of client is displayed next to the Installation Type: entry.
