Getting started with DESlock+ (Installation and licencing)

This article refers to setting up DESlock+ in a standalone capacity, however if you are trying to setup DESlock+ in a managed capacity using the DESlock+ Enterprise Server, please click this link which will take you to our relevant knowledge base article that will guide you through the process.


To set up your copy of DESlock+, you will need to download your version of DESlock+ and save it to you computer. Once saved, double click on the .MSI file and the Setup Wizard will initiate, you will be presented with the screen below, click 'Next

You will then be presented with the End User agreement, you should select the opion next to 'I accept the terms in the Licence Agreement' and click 'Next'

You will now see the readme file which details all of the updates and bug fixes, click 'Next' and you will be presented with the following window where you will be asked to provide a Username and Company Name. You should supply an appropriate username, a company name is not compulsory, click 'Next'

The Ready to install window will be displayed, click 'Install', The installing window will be displayed and (depending on your operating system) you will be presented with a User Account Control user interface, click 'Yes'. The installation should now be completed and you will see the 'Completing the Setup Wizard window. Before you can start using DESlock+, a restart of your machine is required. If you do not wish to restart your machine now, select the option 'No, i will restart my computer later', otherwise keep the option 'Restart my computer now' selected and click 'Finish'


Once your computer has restarted, you will be presented with the following window, click the 'Setup' button.  Note: If you are migrating an existing licence from another system you should click the 'Restore' button and follow the steps detailed here: KB65 - I have just bought a new computer/laptop, how do I access my encrypted files/folders on my new workstation?

You now be presented with the Licence Wizard, click 'Next' and you will see the window below. Enter the Product ID and Product Key that was emailed to you and click 'Next'

You will now see the Licence Details wizard which will look similar to below depending on the licence which you have bought. If you have a Standard licence, the 'Full Disk' icon will be greyed out with a red cross over it and if you have a essential licence, both the 'Removable' and 'Full Disk' icons will be greyed out with a red cross over them. Click 'Next'

You will next see the Key-File name window, supply an appropriate name for your Key-File and click 'Next'. The following window will now be displayed where you will be prompted to supply a Key-File password and then confirm the password. 

Please note that it is advisable to either make a note of this password or select a password which you will not be able to forget. If you do forget you password, it cannot be retrieved and any data encrypted with the Key-File associated with this password will not be able to be accessed or decrypted.

At this point, you will also see an 'Auto logon at startup' checkbox, by putting a tick in this box DESlock+ will automatically log in when you log into Windows. Click 'Next'

You will be given the option to 'Generate a default encryption key' by having a tick in the relevant box as seen below, you will be able to select the algorithm (AES, Blowfish or 3DES) which you wish to apply to your default encryption key from the drop down box and you can name the Key appropriately. Click 'Next' and then click 'Finish'

Finally, you will see the window below where you will be required to make a Key-File Backup. This is in case you Key-File is accidentally deleted or your machine become corrupt. By making a Key-File backup, you can re-install DESlock and click the 'Restore' button and restore your Key-File from your backup so that you can gain access to encrypted removable media drives, file, folders, emails, archives, virtual disks etc. IT is advised that at least 2 backups are taken in two different locations which are not on the machine on which DESlock+ is installed (i.e. a removable media drive or a network drive) so that they can be easily accessed if required. Click the 'Browse' button and select an appropriate location.  You should now see a window confirming that the Key-File was successfully backed up.

DESlock+ is now setup and you can start to use the various features of DESlock+.
